apple iPad 2 event invitation

Invitation to Apple's event on 2nd March

Apple have issued invitations to an event on Wednesday where it is expected they will announce the iPad 2 – the next generation of their tablet computer. The image on the invitation certainly seems to imply that this will be the case (see picture).

Of course there is a lot of speculation already as to what the new iPad range will be. Better screen? Bigger capacity? Maybe a camera? We won’t know for sure until Apple unveil the news on Thursday. In the meantime I would like to think about the changes Apple could make to the iPad to make it more family friendly.

The iPad is a fantastic family device. It is easy and intuitive to use. The geekdaughter (aged 3) can not only undertake the simple tasks – turn on, navigate to games, select required game etc – but she can also undertake some more advanced operations, such as using the pinch action to zoom the screen in and out. She still can’t operate a mouse, and certainly couldn’t find her way around a Windows PC, but she’s got the iPad sussed. In fact she’s frequently surprised to find other devices exist that do not work in the same way – for example she was using a digital camera yesterday, looking at the pictures on the little screen on the back, and swiping the screen to try to move to the next photo!

But after 9 months of living with an iPad, there are definitely some features I would like to see on the next version. Features that would make it much more family friendly.

1. Multiple user configuration - I don’t want the geekdaughter to access my emails, or my Twitter, and heaven forbid that she discovers that We Farm exists! Top of my wishlist for the new iPad would be individual logons, and the ability to configure who can access which apps.

2. Parental controls – if I can’t have individual logons, I would at least like the ability to lock or password protect certain apps and functions. For example, I don’t want the geekdaughter browsing YouTube unsupervised, so I’d like to be prompted for a password on that app. I’d also like to selectively enable and disable the WiFi/Internet connectivity.

3. Parental lock - (are you noticing a trend here?!) The little switch on the side by the volume control. You know, the one that used to be the “orientation lock” and is now a “mute” switch. I’d like to see that re-purposed as a “parental lock” switch. On activation the iPad goes into “child-friendly” mode, disabling the WiFi and only allowing the opening of “whitelisted” apps. Thus you could just flick the switch on handing the iPad to your child, and know they couldn’t get into anything they shouldn’t.

4. Dribble-proof screen – whilst the new retina display technology is lovely, I think it is far more important that the screen be highly resistant to dribble, fingerprints, porridge, and anything else a small child might drop on it. Every time I get my iPad back from the kids there’s a new smudge or mark on it!

Now, I don’t think for a minute any of these features will appear on the list for the iPad 2, but maybe for future versions. How about it, Apple?

What about you? What are you hoping for in the iPad 2?

I don’t know if it’s because I know what I’m looking for this time around, or because things are more obvious with the geekson than they were with the geekdaughter. Perhaps my state of mind is better, who knows. Whatever it is, I am loving watching the geekson grow and learn. I wanted to share a couple of videos of things he’s done recently where I can see him learning or developing.

First of all, a video of him playing with one of his Christmas presents. I remembered from the geekdaughter’s 7 month development check that one of the things the Health Visitor checks for is the ability to pass an object from hand to hand. He was almost 8 months when I shot this video, and it’s a little grainy as I was getting him ready for bed, so it was dark and the only light was the electric light in the room.I spotted him passing the toy from hand to hand, and thought I’d catch it on video so I could prove to the Health Visitor he could do it, just in case he didn’t perform on the day:

In reality, when it came to the day, he “performed” beautifully, and his development check confirmed that he is developing perfectly normally.

The next video was only shot last week, and it was the first day I gave him one of the geekdaughter’s old hammering toys. I don’t remember when the geekdaughter got the hang of hammering, but I think she was older. She also didn’t have as much patience as the geekson has, and wasn’t very keen on just sitting and playing with toys in the way that he did. I was impressed that he got the hang of what he was supposed to do with the hammer so quickly. I also particularly like the geekdaughter’s helpful advice during this video!

As for his latest development, well he’s clearly now working on “pulling up”. He likes to be kneeling up these days, and is starting to try to get one foot underneath him as well. In fact earlier today I found him kneeling at the bottom of the stairs with his hands on the bottom step. Life is getting more and more interesting by the day!

Just relax, it won’t happen

by on February 26, 2011

positive pregnancy test“Just relax, it’ll happen”. When the geekdaddy and I were trying to conceive we heard that phrase a number of times. Any time we mentioned our struggles, invariably someone had an uncle’s sister’s cousin’s niece who couldn’t get pregnant until she gave up work/adopted/had a nice holiday, when her hitherto dormant ovaries finally kicked into action.

It’s one of the least helpful pieces of advice you can give. If you’re feeling stressed anyway (and trust me, if you want to have children, the thought that you might never succeed is pretty stressful all on its on, never mind all the hormone-adjusting treatments you end up going through), having someone to tell you you need to relax is just going to make you more stressed about how stressed you are.

The reason we named our podcast Just Relax it’ll Happen was for the irony of it. We didn’t believe that any amount of relaxing was going to sort out my luteal phase or the geekdaddy’s sperm count. In the end it was modern medicine that gave us our two beautiful children, and I am eternally grateful for that.

So I expect infertile and sub-fertile couples everywhere are rejoicing with the latest news that fertility treatment success is not prevented by stress. Researchers from Cardiff University have reviewed 14 previous studies involving 3,583 women, and their results showed that stress had no impact on whether any of those woman became pregnant or not. Women who were stressed became pregnant at the same rates as those who were not.

Thankfully we’re past the “trying” stage now, but I hope this information will prove useful for those of you still working to build your family.

Bizarre conversations

by on February 22, 2011

the geek family

I just had a weird conversation with the geekdaughter. It went a bit like this:

Me (to the geekson having accidentally knocked him with my foot as I stepped over him): Sorry David

Geekdaughter: Mummy, please will you say sorry to me too?

Me: But I didn’t kick you in the head Catherine

Geekdaughter: Mummy, please will you kick me in the head?

I worry… Really I do. This from the same girl who said to me earlier today “Mummy, when I grow bigger like you I can do chopping with knives”!

Reasons to be grateful… 1…2…3

February 19, 2011

A few weekends ago I had a lovely “girlie weekend” away with friends. A whole two days away from the home, the kids and the geekdaddy. It was lovely, and recharged my batteries no end. Whilst I was away, my Mum took the geekdaughter to a local pantomime – a production of “Treasure Island”. The geekdaughter [...]

Hands on with the Cuddletwist – and a call to arms!

February 17, 2011

I’ve always followed the Cuddledry ladies with interest. I remember watching the episode of Dragon’s Den back in 2007 when two mums, Helen and Polly, pitched their unique baby towel to the panel of investors. They did really well, had several offers of the money they were looking for, but all wanting much larger shares [...]

The Nintendo 3DS is coming

February 15, 2011

This is a sponsored post Here’s the latest Nintendo promotional video for their forthcoming handheld gaming platform, the 3DS. It’s due for launch in the UK on March 25th, and I must confess this video has piqued my interest a bit. I am not a fan of 3D, and purposely seek out the 2D version [...]

A Valentines Song for all the Mums

February 14, 2011

A friend of mine on Facebook reminded me this morning of the fantastic “Mom Song” - comedienne Anita Renfroe’s rendition of all the things a Mum says during the day to the William Tell Overture. Seriously. If you’ve not seen it before, check it out – it’s brilliant. This lost me a happy hour on her [...]

High temperature in babies – take it very seriously

February 13, 2011

No parent ever wants to see their child like this. This picture is of the geekson, at just 2 weeks old, in the High Dependency Unit of our local hospital. He spent a total of 5 days in hospital, including 24 hours in the HDU with nil by mouth. Babies don’t understand nil by mouth. [...]
