The geekdaughter has been complaining of tummy ache again. I’m finding it hard to cope with, as she does seem to have a tendency to complain of stomach ache when it’s bedtime, or when I’ve asked her to do something she doesn’t want to. I’m never sure it’s 100% genuine, so I’m afraid I’m usually a bad mother and very intolerant of her complaints. It started on Friday when she was staying with some friends to allow the geekdaddy and I a child-free night to attend the MAD Blog Awards. It seemed to come and go, so we didn’t take it too seriously…
Sunday night was different though. Sunday night at bedtime she started complaining of headache as well as tummy ache. So we gave her some Calpol, which seemed to sort it. Until she walked into our room at 3.30 yesterday morning, crying and again complaining of head ache. Oh, that was a rather painful wakeup I must say. Both the geekdaddy and I generally sleep very heavily, so much so that we wondered before having children if we would hear them overnight. Believe me when I say I was wide awake the minute I heard our bedroom door open and the geekdaughter sniffling as she came in. When I put my hand out to touch her forehead I could tell she was hot. Calpol time again!
She was so tired she went to sleep as soon as I got her back to bed. I was not so lucky. Lying in bed, all sorts of stuff going through my head, it took me ages to get back to sleep again, and when my early morning alarm when off it was far too early! The geekdaughter slept late, and when she got up it was clear she was still not right, so a duvet day was prescribed.
And then comes the curse of the working mother. With it being a working day for both myself and the geekdaddy we had to find a way to look after the geekdaughter too. We’ve got a great system in place, which works fine when both kids are well, but the minute something changes, like one of the kids being sick, we have to re-plan at short notice. And that applies to all working families, we’re not alone in this. We’re actually better placed in this regard than many of our peers, with family who live locally, the geekdaddy working from home, and also through the wonders of modern technology I can do most of my job from home too. Yesterday I could change my work commitments around to work from home, so that is what I ended up doing.
It was obvious our little one was feeling poorly, as she was happy to just lie on the sofa for most of the day watching television. So thankfully I managed to get all my work done mostly undisturbed. It did look like she was perking up and starting to feel better, but then last night about 11pm she ended up being sick. My poor baby 🙁
So here we are. Tuesday. Tuesday is Daddy day, so I’ll be heading off to the office and leaving the geekdaddy to hold the fort, whatever happens. Hopefully she’ll be feeling better today though.
It’s difficult though, isn’t it? Balancing work and parenting? How do you manage when things don’t go to plan?
