We’re an app-loving family (as you might have guessed by now), and I really enjoy sharing my favourite apps with you in my “app of the week” segment every Friday. I actually have quite a long list of apps that I’m going to share with you over the coming weeks. However, sometimes I hear about price discounts or offers on our favourite apps that just won’t wait until my next Friday segment, and I have to tell you about them as soon as I know!
Today I heard of one such offer. The Swedish kids app developer Toca Boca have halved the price of all their apps for Thanksgiving. These apps usually retail for between £1.49 and £1.99, and they are all available for just 69p until Monday. No, I’m not quite sure why a Swedish company is celebrating an American holiday, but if it involves cheaper apps then I’m all for it!!
The studio have produced several apps, some have separate iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch versions, but a good number are Universal apps and will run on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. They’re all suitable for the older toddler or pre-schooler – the geekdaughter (aged 4) has got a lot of play time from the apps we already owned, and I’ve taken advantage of the sale to pick up the couple of apps we didn’t have already at a bargain price! I’ll certainly be featuring at least one of these apps in a future “app of the week” segment – the challenge will be deciding which one!
So what apps are in the Toca Boca stable? Here’s a quick overview of what’s on offer:
Toca Doctor HD (iPad only) (normal price £1.49) and – Toca Doctor (iPhone / iPod Touch) (normal price 69p) (there are also free “Lite” versions of each available to try)
You’re the doctor! Play a selection of health-related mini-games to make your patient better (see trailer video below)
Toca Hair Salon – Universal (normal price £1.49)
You’re the hairdresser! You can cut, colour and style your client’s hair.
Paint My Wings – Universal (normal price 69p)
Lovely little simple painting app – choose a colour, paint the butterfly wings one side – your colouring is mirrored on the other side. Of all the apps, this is the most simple one and best for younger children.
Toca Tea Party – iPad only (normal price £1.99)
Create your own virtual tea party – you set the places, choose the cakes and cookies to serve, and then eat and drink.
Toca Store – Universal (normal price £1.49)
Set up shop – choose your stock first, then sell items to your customers
Toca Robot Lab – Universal (normal price 69p)
Put pieces of scrap together to make a robot, then test it with a little mini game
Helicopter Taxi – iPhone/iPod Touch (runs on iPad in compatibility mode only) (normal price 69p)
Turn your device into a helicopter. Fly around your home using a cunning mix of on-screen graphics and your device’s camera. This is the app that I’m most likely to spend time playing, I must say!
Parenting’s Birthday Party Playtime – Universal (normal price £1.49)
Hold a virtual birthday party – serve cake and drinks, blow the candles out and then eat and drink.
You can see trailers for the above apps on the Toca Boca YouTube channel.
I particularly love the way that some of these apps (Store, Tea Party and Birthday Party) are designed to encourage creative play – you can either have multiple people interacting at the same time, or your child can involve their dolls and teddies as virtual shop customers or party guests. All apps are brightly coloured, engaging, and nicely designed, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend any one of them. They are all available for just 69p in the app store for this weekend only, which is half price or more for most apps, so it’s a good chance to grab yourself a bargain or two.
