On my birthday – the meme

On my birthdayI was tagged by the lovely Kate who blogs at the five fs blog for her “on my birthday” meme. The idea is that you head on over to Wikipedia, search for your date of birth, and read all the interesting stuff there is to know about your birthday. Then share the most interesting stuff by answering a selection of questions.

So here we go with mine…

When is your birthday? 27th July

Pick three people who share your birthday and share what you know about them.

Christopher Dean (1958) – Olympic gold medal winning ice skater. I am a big fan – I remember watching the Olympics when he won the gold medal with his partner Jayne Torvill for Bolero. Still gives me goosebumps watching that, even now, although the edge has been somewhat taken off it by their TV series “Dancing on Ice”…

Hilaire Belloc – author and poet. My favourite poem of his is “Matilda” – Matilda told such Dreadful Lies / It made one Gasp and Stretch one’s Eyes…;

Johann Bernoulli – Swiss mathematician. Given that my degree is in mathematics, I am quite pleased to have been born on the same day as a famous mathematician (even if the Bernoulli effect was actually the work of Johann’s older brother Jacob).

Is anyone listed as being born on the same day as you (ie the same year)? If so, what do you know about them?

No, no-one else in my year.

List three people who died on your birthday and tell us what you know about them.

Looking down the list the one name that jumps out at me is Bob Hope (English-born American entertainer) who died on my birthday in 2003 (although I must confess I wasn’t aware of it happening at the time). I must confess I don’t know much about him, but he was the only familiar name in the list!

I was fascinated to learn that there was an Australian actor called Lucky Grills who died on my birthday in 2007 – that’s a fantastic name!

Despite being the daughter of a jazz musician I have never heard of Sweets Edison, an American jazz trumpet player who apparently died on my birthday in 1999. I really didn’t do very well with this question did I?

List three notable events that took place on your birthday.

Some very interesting things have happened on my birthday during history. On July 27 1694 the Bank of England received its royal charter as a commercial institution. Given that I work for a large financial institution I find that very interesting.

On my birthday in 1940 Bugs Bunny made his debut in the Warner Bros. animated cartoon “A Wild Hare”.

And on my birthday in 1996 a pipe bomb exploded at a public park during the Olympic games in Atlanta, killing one person and injuring more than 100.

And if we’re allowed to count future events as well, the 2012 Olympic games opening ceremony is being held on my birthday this year :)

Tell us about a holiday that falls on your birthday.

I was really quite delighted to discover the existance of National Sleepy Head Day (Finnish: Unikeonpäivä) which is celebrated in Finland on July 27 every year. Traditionally on this day, the last person in the house (also dubbed as the “laziest”) to wake up is woken up using water, either by being thrown into a lake or the sea, or by having water thrown on them. It is based on the story of the Saints of Ephesus who slept in a cave for some 200 years during the Middle Ages whilst hiding from persecution by Decius, the Roman Emperor at the time.
Whilst I was growing up I relished any opportunity when my Dad overslept to wake him with a cold wet flannel – perhaps that was the influence of the Finnish?

So now it just remains for me to tag some other lovely bloggers to join in with this meme. I would like to tag Ruth at Minibreak Mummy, Emma or Rachel at Major Love of Film and Claire at Ninja Killer Cat. I hope you guys enjoy researching your birthdays as much as I enjoyed researching mine!
