Our first real family day out

by on April 3, 2012

smiling happy kidsOn Sunday it was our guide-son’s second birthday, and his parents invited a select group of family and friends to spend the day with them at Drayton Manor park. We have only been to Drayton Manor once before, shortly after the geekson was born, when the geekdaughter would have been about two and three-quarters. She absolutely loved it then, and still remembers to this day which of the ThomasLand rides she didn’t get to go on. So I had no doubts that the geekson was probably old enough to enjoy the outing, so I cashed in some of my Tesco Clubcard vouchers to buy tickets for us all, and off went!

As soon as we told her where we were going, the geekdaughter’s memories came flooding back. “We have to go on the planes Mummy, because we didn’t go on the planes last time”. And from the minute we walked through the gates she was dragging us around from ride to ride, wanting to go on everything!

We had a brilliant day. I really didn’t expect there would be quite so much that the geekson would enjoy, and it was lovely to be doing things as a family, all together, all of us getting a roughly even amount of fun from it all. I think it’s really the first time we’ve had an outing like that, despite having all gone out together before – this was the first time it felt like the geekson was really participating. I recorded an audio blog entry to capture my thoughts yesterday, so you can hear me talk about it more here:

In most cases an audio player should be visible just above. If you can’t see it you can access my recording directly on the Audioboo website here

Here are some pictures from our day out:

Both kids sitting nicely together on the Thomas train. It's not the best picture, but I don't get many of them together these days as they're usually moving too quickly, so it was nice to capture this one!

We all enjoyed the huge model railway with Thomas chuffing around!

The geekson was very cooperative and took his usual afternoon nap, despite the bright sunshine

The geekdaughter loved the driving school and very carefully followed the white arrows around the track (maybe she will end up being a rule follower like me!)

The geekson spent most of the day with this kind of expression on his face - he thought it was all wonderful!

And the geekdaughter loved the whole day, but was fast asleep in the car within 5 minutes of leaving the gates!
