The geekdaughter, as I may have mentioned once or twice already, is starting primary school in September. We are in the fortunate position of being allocated a place at our first choice school, the one we are in the catchment area for, the one that her cousin already attends. She is beyond excited, and so very ready to start. I am a mixture of hugely proud of her, but at the same time knowing I’ll be an emotional wreck the first time I turn my back and walk away from her at the school gate.
As I’m sure is not unusual we are buried in forms at the moment – there seem to be so many needed for school! I’ve completed all the parental permission forms and the standard emergency contact and medical information forms. I have even managed to find her birth certificate, which was no mean feat with our filing “system” I can tell you.
One of the forms we’ve had to complete is an “all about me” form, which is a series of questions designed to help the school get to know your child. It starts off with some simple yes/no questions – can the child wash themself, go to the toilet by themself, put their coat on, dress themself and eat with a knife and fork (the geekdaughter can do all of these things). Then there are a series of free text questions to complete. A few days ago I sat down with the geekdaughter and asked her all the questions. She answered each one articulately and quickly, and all I did was to write down her exact words. She impressed me with her answers, if I’m honest.
Anyway I thought it would be fun to capture her responses here on my blog. The prompt questions are shown below in bold, her answers are in normal text and my editorial comments (not included on the actual form) are in italics. I enjoyed doing this with her, it gave me some insights into her opinions on things, and I might even try asking her the same questions again in a year’s time to see how she’s changed. So here’s everything you could want to know about the geekdaughter, aged 4 years and 9 months:
I am happy when… I play in the playground or when I am dancing
I am sad when… Mummy doesn’t let me do what I want to do. And when things hurt
I get cross when… I don’t get cross (Mummy might disagree with this one, but I let it ride…)
I feel worried when… I am in the dark and I think monsters are behind me
I don’t like… people hurting me. I don’t like spicy food
Best of all I like… The play barn and the playground
My favourite food is… cake (could have guessed that one!)
My favourite songs, rhymes and stories are… Little Miss Muffet, The Wizard of Oz
My favourite game is… hide and seek
My favourite toy is… Lego
My favourite television programme is… The Wizard of Oz (Yes, she means the 1939 movie – she’s completely obsessed with it at the moment)
When I’m at home I like to… Play in the garden, ride my bike, watch television, dance
My pets are… A very old cat called Elliott (he’s 18) (she was quite insistent about including his age- I suspect it’s because we keep stressing that he’s an old cat!)
So there’s a little glimpse into the geekdaughter’s world for you. I hope you enjoyed it!

She sounds great! My youngest is 5 1/2 now and just finishing her Reception year. Those answers sound exactly like those my daughter would make.

What a lovely post. I love all her answers especially the one about the cat including his age, very sweet indeed!
Doesn’t like spicy food, huh? Miss M says the same thing, but *loves* taco night! (I’m also guessing, given the rest of the Geek Family’s love of Indian food, that dislike of spice is sometimes a challenge.)
That’s so cute! I just finished the same marathon form-filling session and as we chatted about on FB, I too am feeling nervous. JD is a little nervous since his taster day. Apparently the teachers ‘told him what to do too much’. I had to gently break it to him that school’s pretty much about doing what you’re told. Think I managed to get his buy in again by saying they will give him the education he needs to become a paleontologist
