Today is the geekdaughter’s very last day in nursery. Ever. I still don’t think I’ve got my head around that yet. She’s growing up, and getting all ready to start proper school next week! Her final “All About Me” folder (a collection of her work along with observations from the staff) was sent home with her yesterday, today it will be all her spare clothes and wellington boots that make their way home with her. The geekdaddy will be a complete wreck I think – he’s getting very emotional about his little girl growing up. Plus it will be his job to drop her off in the morning and collect her at the end of the day as I shall be at work, so I suspect I’ll get off lightly.
Tuesday was the geekdaddy’s last Daddy day looking after both kids, and he spent part of it helping the geekdaughter bake cakes to share with all her nursery friends. She requested green icing specifically. Yesterday she took them in and shared them around – I think they went down pretty well! Today she’s taking a special thank you card for the staff – she told us what she wanted to write in this, we just told her what letters she needed. I think it’s beautiful:
thank you for helping me learn letters and numbers love Catherine
Yesterday evening we sat together in her bedroom – her, the geekdaddy and me. We talked about her last day, whether she was sad, whether she was looking forward to school. The geekdaddy and I talked about how we felt, and the geekdaddy said he was sad because she’s growing up, and whilst he wants her to grow up mostly, part of him loves her the way she is right now. Displaying the same wisdom above her years that I talked about in my previous blog post, the geekdaughter turned to him and said
“Daddy don’t be sad. I’ll still be me, just bigger”.
I probably will shed a tear for the end of an era. But if she can remain that wise I know I’m going to be damned proud of her as she grows up.
Although the geekdaddy had his last Daddy day with both kids this week, he does get one last very special Daddy day with just the geekdaughter on Monday. There’s an inset day at her school, so she won’t actually start until Tuesday, meaning that the geekdaddy will look after her all day, whilst the geekson will be in nursery. I think he might try to do something a bit special with her… We’ll see…
