One of the things I don’t think I’m particularly good at as a parent is finding interesting things to see and do with my kids. I know the information is out there, but I’m not good at rounding it up and making plans in advance. So when I heard that two characters from the Octonauts, one of the geek kids’ favourite TV shows, were visiting a nearby shopping centre, I leapt at the chance to do something new and different with them. It’s all about giving them opportunities and life experiences, right?
Octonauts is a children’s TV series – an unlikely team of animals lead by a polar bear sail the seas in their strange under-water vessel, the OctoPod. Along the way they meet and learn about different sea creatures. The geekdaughter has been a fan for a while now, which has meant that the geekson has grown up with it, and they both now really enjoy the show. In order to keep things fair the kids take turns to choose what to watch on the television, and the Octonauts is one of the few shows that both kids are equally likely to choose.
The picture at the top of this post shows the geekdaughter’s face when she first glimpsed the huge Captain Barnacles and Kazii Cat in the shopping centre. She was so excited. The geekson was interested but a little unsure, and once we got close to them he just wanted to cuddle me. Still the geekdaddy managed to get a reasonable picture of the three of us:
It was something a little bit different, a bit of fun for a Sunday morning. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for more things like this to do with the kids – the whole experience only lasted a few minutes, but it was free and it got us all out of the house 🙂
