We moved the geekdaughter out of her cotbed and into a “proper” bed when she was two and a half. There was no reason to do this as far as she was concerned – she hadn’t mastered climbing out or anything like that – but rather because her little brother was about to arrive and he would need it. We did seriously consider buying a second cot, but decided that was not the best use of our money and we might as well buy a full sized bed instead.
It was a bit of a shock when we moved the geekdaughter into her “big girl bed”. The girl who, up to that point, had been happy to sit and “read” books in her cot in the mornings whilst she waited for me to go in and get her up now started bouncing out of bed at some unholy hour in the morning and coming to wake me up. The purchase of a colour changing clock sorted most of this out, but it did all leave me resolved to keep the geekson in his cot for as long as possible!
And that is why the geekson, at the age of three and half, is still sleeping in the cotbed. We’ve used Grobag sleeping bags with both our kids, and found them the best thing ever for safe and easy sleep. But the geekson is starting to grow out of the 18-36 months ones, and they don’t come any bigger than that, so it was time to move to proper bedding. I felt it was a sign when my local Aldi had some special offers on kids’ pillows and cotbed duvets, and I finished the ensemble with a Cars 2 bedding set that I picked up off eBay.
As a reward for staying dry one day (potty training still progressing pretty well) I set his new bedding up. So now he’s sleeping like this:
We will take the sides off some time soon I am sure, but this is enough for the moment! As yet he hasn’t managed to climb out, so there’s no strong reason to take the sides off. We have, however, started offering it as a reward for successful potty training, so we’ll have to see how that goes!
Yet another sign that my little boy is growing up *sigh*
