It’s a bold claim when a company emails you describing themselves as “The World’s Leading Digital Toy Developer”, but when that company is Swedish app developer Toca Boca, it’s completely justified. After all, this is a company that has recently celebrated 50 million worldwide downloads of its apps, all of which appear to be universally loved. It’s certainly one of the few app developers who I have no hesitation to recommend everything they’ve ever released, as all their digital toys are built to a high quality, and encourage creative play by giving kids free rein to do pretty much anything they like in each game. Recently Toca Boca have released another two new titles, and they sent me promo codes to try they out…
Toca Mini (iOS Universal (affiliate link) – £1.99 and Kindle Fire (affiliate link) – £1.88) this is a fantastically creative game, where you start off with a totally blank little “mini me” character. In a box and everything. Your child can colour them and add features such as eyes and mouth. As each feature is added the little mini me comes more to life (for example when you add a mouth it will start talking). When you’ve finished creating your mini you can take a screenshot to remember it by, and then with a press of the “reset” button the box lid will close, the little mini will be taken away and a new blank one will arrive to be decorated.
Toca Hair Salon Me (iOS Universal (affiliate link) – £1.99) is the newest incarnation of Toca Boca’s very popular hair salon range, and the twist with this one is that you get to do your own hair. Yes, the app lets you take a photo of yourself (or select one from the camera roll), and then it takes that picture and makes a little digital version of you as a person. You can then style your own virtual hair in any way you like. So far we’ve made little digital versions of the geekdaddy and the geekdaughter, and whilst I think they look a little freaky, they make both kids giggle and they love changing their hairstyles.
Toca Boca have done it again – twice! Both of this apps have the level of quality I’ve come to expect from them as a developer, and I am sure they will give hours of open-ended play for your kids. Highly recommended for pre-schoolers and older.
Disclosure: I was provided with a promo code for each of these apps that gave me the ability to download them at no cost and in advance of general release. Links to the iTunes and Amazon app stores within this post contain my affiliate ID – if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will receive a small commission payment. I only operate affiliate schemes with suppliers I recommend and would be linking to anyway.
