Platform and Price: iOS (Universal) and Android, free but with in app purchases ranging from 69p to £69.99
App overview: FarmVille 2 is the sequel to FarmVille, but where the original was written first for Facebook and then adapted as an app, which was never all that successful, this time it’s been developed for mobile first. It’s very much more of the same – you develop your farm, plant and harvest crops, craft items, explore and generally waste time!
What I like about it: It’s a vast improvement on FarmVille, both in terms of app quality and gameplay. For example, I always hated how crops would decay if you didn’t harvest them fast enough in the original, and that’s been removed from the newer version. It’s a fun little game to dip in and out of.
What could be better: I’m not a fan of in-app purchases at all, and in this app there are loads. You can buy both coins to buy stuff in game, and keys to speed up in-game production. I think that this is also one of the most misleading things I’ve ever seen in the world of in-app purchases:
No Zynga, no. If you work out the price per key, the “suitcase of keys” is NOT best value! Not in my book anyway.
What parents need to know: I would not recommend this app for kids. It has social media connections with the ability to link to a Facebook account. In addition within the game you are able to join a “co-operative” – a group of players who can share workers and chat together, so your child can end up chatting to people they don’t know. As previously mentioned there are also in-app purchases, so if you do allow your child to play I strongly recommend disabling in-app purchases on your device. On the plus side there are no adverts in the game!
Our Verdict: As a casual gamer I am finding this game fun at the moment, but I’ve no idea how long that will last!
