App overview: Loomin’ gives safe access to Rainbom Loom instructional videos on YouTube. It holds a curated list of over 100 instructional videos, sorted by difficulty. The developer says the selection of videos will be updated regularly. Familiar controls allow your child to select a video to watch, and they can also mark a video as a favourite to pin it to the top of the list.
What I like about it: As the geekdaughter is only 6 I am not happy giving her unlimited access to YouTube. This app ensures she can only get at specially selected instructional videos, and I am quite happy leaving her to watch and try to follow along with her loom, safe in the knowledge that she won’t end up clicking off onto less suitable videos.
What could be better: If I was being really picky I’d love more videos. I’m also not sure how often the video list is going to get changed – the developer says “regularly”, but I don’t know what that looks like as I’ve only just got the app myself. Updating might mean removing some videos as well as adding others, so in theory your child’s favourite video might disappear, but I’m hoping that wouldn’t happen.
What parents need to know: This app is SO much safer than just letting your child watch Rainbow Loom videos on YouTube. No adverts. No in-app purchases. No way for your child to find their way to less suitable videos. One thing I forgot to mention in my podcast – because this app accesses the videos on YouTube it requires an internet connection in order to work.
Our Verdict: If you’ve got a Rainbom Loom fan in the family, you NEED this app!
