Platform and Price: iOS (Universal – requires iOS v4.3 and above, will run on original iPad) – £1.99 / Kindle Fire – 59p / Android – £1.69
App overview: This app mimics playing with construction toys in a sandpit. Your child can choose from a collection of 8 vehicles, and can then interact and play with their chosen vehicle. Each vehicle comes with a number of tasks to complete – a diagram on the background shows what needs to be done, and you child will receive a gold star when they succeed. In the iOS App Store this app is recommended for ages 5 and under, although my six and a half year old still plays with it from time to time.
What I like about it: Any transport-loving toddler or pre-schooler will love being able to interact with the different construction vehicles. I like the variety of vehicles as well – there’s a good selection of different tasks to complete.
What could be better: Sometimes the controls are not completely intuitive, and it’s not always clear from the diagram what needs to be done to earn a particular star. My son has mostly mastered the app, but every now and again he comes up against something he can’t manage, and gets frustrated.
What parents need to know: There is an advert on the home screen of this app for one of the developers’ other apps – I haven’t found a way to get rid of this. If pressed it will take your child into the App Store, and inevitably result in a “can I have that app too Mummy?”. The language and vibration settings can be accessed from your devices Settings app, and not within this app itself. There is a Lite version of the app available in the App Store, but it only has 1 of the 8 vehicles unlocked. On the plus side it is free so you can try the app out before you buy.
Our Verdict:Great fun for your transport-loving tot
