The geekson absolutely loves cars, so when we were sent the Hot Wheels Super Speed Blastway to review he couldn’t wait to play with it.
Here is what Mattel say about the Hot Wheels Super Speed Blastway:
Who has the skills and the speed to cross the finish line first? Send your Hot Wheels flying on the Super Speed Blastway and pitting them against the competition until the finish flag decides who is the ultimate champion! Drivers launch up towards the grandstands so fast, they knock off the pit crew one at a time with every lap until the car in the lead activates the checkered flag for a grand victory. Kids will love the side-by-side racing action activated by two kid-activated slam launchers. Grandstands feature pop off characters activated by every completed lap around the speedway. Finish flag appears at the end of the race to reward the winner! Connects to other HotWheels track sets so kids can continue to build an entire world of racing thrills. Priced at around RRP £22.99
The Super Speed Blastway is a Hot Wheels set which can be played with as a completely stand alone toy, or can be connected in to other Hot Wheels tracks you may already own. It uses the Hot Wheels Connect system, where pieces of orange track are connected together using little blue connectors, which the geekson finds easier to work with than the older connection system. The set is supplied in pieces, but doesn’t take too much assembly, and we were up and ready to play in just a few minutes.
Although the track is very much geared at racing two cars against each other, there is only one car supplied in the box. So if you are giving this as a gift and are not sure if the recipient has any compatible cars already, it might be worth buying another car to go with it. There is a little disclaimer on the back of the box that says “Not for use with some Hot Wheels vehicles”, but there is no information as to which ones won’t work. We’ve certainly managed to use all the geekson’s existing Hot Wheels cars with the set with no problems.
The Super Speed Blastway actually has a really neat action. Once you’ve set the track up you use the launchers to propel your cars up and around the loops. Each time around the loop they knock off one of the pop-up figures from the back wall in turn, with the chequered flag being the last to go. The track is cunningly designed so that once the car has completed the loop it returns to the launcher ready for the next run. the geekson got the hang of it really easily, and has loved playing with it. We did find there is some skill required with launching the car – push too hard and it flies off the track, but push too gently and it doesn’t hit the loop with enough force to knock off the figures. We’ve had great fun as a family competing against each other with this set!
A nice design feature of the Super Speed Blastway is the way it will connect with other Hot Wheels tracks. The orange ramp pieces and the launchers have standard Hot Wheels connectors and so can be bolted into any other track piece you wish. And the loop part has a couple of trap doors that open up allowing you to connect track there as well. The geekson was intrigued by this, and although it was a bit more fiddly to connect the track that way, it did allow for some quick creative track creation.
The Hot Wheels Super Speed Blastway is available from a variety of toy retailers for around £22.99 (for example it’s currently available on Amazon (affiliate link) for £21.99). It’s a good self contained set which offers hours of play on its own, or can be combined with other sets, so the geekson and I recommend it as a great buy for any Hot Wheels loving child. And if you’re thinking of buying any additional Hot Wheels cars to go with this or any other set I want to make you aware of an exclusive promotion: buy five Hot Wheels cars to get your hands on a free, limited edition Black Car!
