I made the mistake of letting the geekson watch the trailer for the forthcoming Skylanders release, Superchargers, a couple of months ago. This created a problem for me, because since then my Skylanders-loving boy has refused to play either Trap Team or Swap Force (the two Skylanders versions that we own). He is just desperate to play the new game because of the vehicles. He loves Skylanders and he loves vehicles, so this for him is just a dream come true. He keeps asking me when the new version of Skylanders will be available (the UK release date is 25th September).
Last month the Skylanders team sent the geekson two new Trap Team Skylanders for him to test out. Let me introduce you to King Cobra Cadabra and Fling Kong:
On paper they sound great. King Cobra Cadabra is a Magic element Skylander who can blast enemies with his Magic Pungi Flute or damage them by throwing cobra baskets at them. Fling Kong is an air element Skylander who can throw frisbees (or as they’re called in game “Power Discs”) at his enemies, or charge them with a Magic Carpet Dash attack. I wish I could tell you how they play in game, but as I mentioned before I can’t get the geekson to work up any enthusiasm for the “old” Skylanders whilst he is dreaming of Superchargers.
If you have a Skylanders-loving child, I strongly recommend you keep them away from any news about the forthcoming release, so that they can continue to play their current version in happy ignorance! Learn from my mistake, please.
The good news for us at least is that, as with previous Skylanders releases, Superchargers will have backwards compatibility with all Skylanders characters from previous games (there’s apparently 317 of them currently). So we’ll be able to give Fling Kong and King Cobra Cadabra lots of play time when Superchargers releases.
Today the geekson is even more excited, because Activision have just announced that they are adding a racing mode to Skylanders Superchargers. He already loves other racing games, so is really looking forward to being able to race with kis Skylanders too. According to the Activision press release:
Skylanders’ all-new Racing Mode, playable in Land, Sea and Sky environments, features supercharged racing combat, layering in even more depth and excitement to the game’s online multiplayer component. The high-octane mode is further amplified with all-new time trials, which include three-lap races that take friendly competition up a notch as players battle for the best time score on the leaderboard. All Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Packs will come loaded with six dynamic race tracks – two each for Land, Sea and Sky. With hidden routes, power-ups, and diverse locations, Racing Mode offers completely new ways to enjoy the game. Whether played in offline split-screen or online multiplayer, gamers can choose the best route to finish a race, trying to avoid attacks along the way as they navigate through dynamic environments. Voice-chat is available with friends for an added layer of excitement.
Skylanders SuperChargers delivers more ways to play than ever before:
- Single-player Adventure Mode
- Online and local co-operative Adventure Mode
- Local 2-player head-to-head racing in split screen
- Online competitive racing with up to 4 players
“Skylanders fans told us they wanted to go head-to-head in online multiplayer with their friends and family, and we delivered. Skylanders SuperChargers enables gamers to race against friends all over the world and brings an exciting new expansion to the Skylanders gameplay experience,” said John Coyne, senior vice president of consumer marketing, Activision Publishing, Inc. “We continue to be firmly committed to driving Skylanders’ spirit for providing originality, innovation, creativity and fun with each game.”
My friends over at Family Gamer TV have released several gameplay videos of the new race tracks in play. The geekson’s favourite is this one, which shows Dragon Spire, one of the Land tracks, which even involves racing over the back of two large dragons!
I tell you, September 25th can’t come fast enough in this house!
Disclosure: Activision sent us two Skylanders Trap Team characters for review. We were previously sent Skylanders Trap Team and Skylanders Swap Force for review purposes.
