The geekdaughter is obsessed with watching YouTube videos of people opening blind bags. There is a huge market in little collectible toys that come in opaque packaging so that you can’t see which one you’re getting until you open it. Of course, having watched the toys in play on YouTube, she then wants to start collecting herself. We already have an invasion of Shopkins in the house, but there is one collectible toy she has wanted since seeing it on YouTube that we haven’t yet managed to find in UK shops – Num Noms.
The reason why we haven’t been able to find them yet became clear when the Num Noms PR team contacted me and asked if the geekdaughter would like to review a Num Noms set to coincide with the UK launch of the product. So we haven’t been able to find them because they haven’t been available over here yet. But all that is about to change.
Num Noms are so called because the characters are all themed around sweet flavours, like cupcakes and ice cream, and because there are two different kinds of characters to collect. The Nums are the outer, soft, squishy characters, and the Noms are the inner, hard-shelled characters that are either motorised to scoot around or filled with flavoured lip gloss. You can nestle a Num inside a Nom for fun mix and match play, pile them high to make wacky combos or race them against each other.
Whilst I personally don’t see the attraction, the geekdaughter thinks they are great. She loves how highly scented the Nums are, and the motorised Nom made her giggle – it has a kind of vibrating action making it move in somewhat unpredictable fashion. The appeal of these toys is partly going to be in playing with them, and partly in collecting them, so I am now bracing myself for the inevitable requests for more sets as the geekdaughter tries to collect them all.
You can buy Num Noms in various different packages. The starter set, which we were sent, retails at £8.99 and contains 3 Nums and one motorised Nom with a spoon and a cup or a cone. Of course there are blind bags available, although in the case of Num Noms they are rather cute yoghurt-style pots rather than actual “bags”. Each pot retails at £2.99 and contains one Num and one flavoured lip gloss Nom. If you’re looking for more Num Noms there is a Deluxe Pack, retailing at £14.99, which includes 6 Nums, 2 motorised Noms plus a spoon and a cup or a cone. And finally you can buy the Num Nom Go-Go Cafe Playset for £24.99, which features a special edition Num Nom, plus loads of fun things for your Num Noms to play on – you can let them scoot around, go on the slide, or have them play on the teeter-totter saucer, spinning doughnut wheel or in the peek-a-boo teapot shower.
Num Noms are just launching in the UK, so look out for them in your favourite high street or online toy store soon.
Disclosure: I was sent a Num Noms starter pack for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
