As a new mother it can often be difficult to meet other mums when your kids are little. As a working mum I found that everyone dropped off and collected from nursery at different times, so I didn’t really get to meet other mums there. And we didn’t do any mother-and-baby type classes, which would have been another way to meet other local mums. It wasn’t really until the geekdaughter started school that I started getting to know the other parents of kids her age. This didn’t bother me too much, as I have a lot of online friends who kept me company throughout my kids’ early years. But for other mums this time can be very isolating, and so a new app, called mush, has been released in order to help you meet other mums locally.
From the press release:
mush was born out of the difficulty its two founders experienced meeting other mums after having their second babies. Katie had recently moved back from New York and Sarah had beaten her other mum friends to having another child. They awkwardly exchanged numbers in a cold playground on their first chance meeting. Both of them longed for an adult conversation and someone to keep them sane during those difficult days at home with small children. They later decided that the serendipitous approach to making mum friends was just not good enough in 2016, in a world that was so well serviced with other ‘dating’ apps.
mush has been described as “Tinder for Mums”. It’s designed to let you find like-minded local mums, and hopefully go on to meet up for play dates or even a G&T. The app is free to install and very easy to set up – you enter the details of your kid(s) – ages and genders. You also pick some words to describe you (I picked “geek”, “social media addict” and “tech nerd” – does that sound appropriate?), and things you like to do – cinema, playground, walking etc. mush will then use that information to find other local mums who describe themselves similarly and have matching interests. All you then need to do is press the “Say Hi” button, and you can start talking.
I must confess that as a socially-awkward introvert I wasn’t brave enough to press the “say hi” button myself – the thought of someone actually chatting with me fills me with fear, so I can’t comment on how that side of things works. But if you’re a new (or not-so-new) mum who wants to meet other mums locally, this could be the app to help you do that.
What about the Dads? Well, at the moment mush is focussed just on mums. But the founders are working in the background and plan to expand it to include Dads and Nannies at a future date.
