This week Activision announced that the next Skylanders game in their hugely successful toys-to-life game will be called Skylanders Imaginators. And yesterday the geekson and I were invited down to London for a special blogger event where we were given the chance to see Skylanders Imaginators in action.
The geekson is a huge Skylanders fan. We first joined the franchise with a review copy of Swap Force, but after that we were hooked. We’ve bought not only every edition since, but also went back to the earlier versions, Spyros Adventures and Giants, because the geekson wants to play them all. When Superchargers was launched last year with special vehicles for the Skylanders I honestly thought that was the best they were going to get. The geekson loves cars and he loves Skylanders, so putting the two together was definitely a hit in our house! But I may have to revise my view, because the news from Activision, hot off the press, is that with the new Skylanders Imaginators kids will be able to invent their own Skylanders and then play them in the game.
We got the chance to see an early build of the game in action (so early that it was still branded as “Skylanders 2016” rather than the finalised name of Imaginators). There will be a new range of characters to collect for this incarnation of the game – the senseis, but I think the thing most kids will love about Imaginators is the ability to create a Skylander from scratch. You will be able to get creation crystals to place on the portal instead of a pre-made character, and they will give access to the Skylander creation options. We saw a demo of the Skylander creation process, and you really can tweak every aspect of the character, from their appearance, colour, weapon and armour all the way to their voice, catchphrases and even dancing style! Yes, apparently this year Skylanders learn the ability to dance. Your Skylander creation will then be saved to the crystal, so you can even take it to a friends house with you to play on their version of the game.
Here’s the official launch video:
The geekson really liked the look of the new game, and I am sure he will spend a lot of time inventing his own Skylanders. He’s already telling me what kinds of Skylanders he wants to create (he has a very strong preference for Tech types!). It’s good to see the Skylanders game evolving in a way that will engage kids’ imaginations like that.
Skylanders Imaginators will launch in the UK on 14th October 2016, and in the US two days later. I know that now he has seen it the geekson is going to be constantly asking me if it’s October yet between now and then! It will be available on the XBox (360 and One), PlayStation (3 and 4) and Wii U. Pre-orders are available now via your favourite online retailers (although I haven’t found it on Amazon yet – I am sure it will be there soon).
Disclosure: The geekson and I were the guests of Activision at the Skylanders Imaginators blogger event. They paid our travel costs and provided a goodie bag which kept the geekson quiet on the train home. All words and opinions are my own.
