acer iconia b1 box viewHere in the geek family we love our tablets. We’ve seen first hand the educational benefits these devices can have, and we’re on a constant mission to find good quality, cost effective family tablets. iPads are lovely, but very expensive, and Android based tablets like the Nexus 7 are starting to prove really viable alterntatives. I was offered the chance to try out the brand new Acer Iconia B1, a sub-£100 7-inch Android tablet; here’s what I thought of it.

When I started posting a selection of pictures from my week a few weeks ago I had intended it to be a regular weekly feature. However I missed last week due to generally drowning under the weight of extra stuff that needs to be done in preparation for Christmas so it’s been a fortnight since I last posted a selection of my favourite pictures. So this week I’m playing catch-up and sharing my favourite photos that I’ve taken in the last two weeks…

I must confess when Panasonic asked me to be one of their “Intelligent Living Mums” I hesitated for a split second. Whilst I do possess all the basic skills needed to run a household, I wouldn’t say I was really known for my domestic ability. However they seduced me with their offer of a trip to their Home Appliances Innovation Centre in Bracknell to see loads of their products in their test kitchen, to give feedback to their product development team, and maybe even get to try some out for myself. So I signed up, hoping I could pull off that air of someone who knows what they’re talking about when I got there…

The LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer is tipped to be one of the most sought-after toys this Christmas. It’s a child’s tablet device, with a touchscreen, built -in camera, and access to a large selection of games via an online store. Does that sound similar to another device, maybe? I am sure there are many iPad-owning parents who are really hoping that this is the toy that will enable them to claim their tablet back from their offspring! But will it do that? We were sent a LeapPad Explorer to review a couple of months ago, and having had a decent amount of time to test it, I am now ready to share my full thoughts on the device…

How the iPad can make long car journeys easier with small children

October 12, 2011

Tweet “Kids always sleep in cars!”. When the geekdaughter was tiny I heard that all the time. And it isn’t always true. It wasn’t true for me then, and it’s not true now. We learned at an early age that the geekdaughter would only ever sleep for a maximum of 30 minutes in the car. [...]

Thanks Steve

October 6, 2011

Tweet I think it’s well-known how much I love my i-Devices. You’ll almost never see me without my iPhone, and I generally have my trusty iPad to hand as well. I’m not a complete Apple devotee though, as I really really don’t like Macs. I inherited the geekdaddy’s old 24″ iMac when he upgraded, and [...]

A first look at the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer, and a chance to win your own!

August 13, 2011

Tweet Tablets are big business. The iPad started it all, but there are a whole host of rivals coming out. And anyone who has a tablet and a small child will know how kids are drawn to them, and not only that, but how good they are at operating them! The geekdaughter is a dab [...]

Apple confirms iPad 2 coming this month

March 3, 2011

Tweet Yesterday Apple confirmed that they will indeed, as speculated, be launching the new iPad 2 later this month. It’s faster, thinner and lighter, and also has two cameras like the iPhone4 – one front-facing and one rear-facing. The geekdaddy is very excited that it’ll be coming in two colours – black and white – [...]

The Nintendo 3DS is coming

February 15, 2011

Tweet This is a sponsored post Here’s the latest Nintendo promotional video for their forthcoming handheld gaming platform, the 3DS. It’s due for launch in the UK on March 25th, and I must confess this video has piqued my interest a bit. I am not a fan of 3D, and purposely seek out the 2D [...]

How I keep my daughter in bed for longer

September 2, 2010

Tweet A couple of months before the geekson was born, we moved the geekdaughter out of the nursery and into her own “big girl” bedroom, complete with “big girl” bed. She coped with the change really well, and loved (still does) her new room. Up until this point she had been happy to stay in [...]

Why I love my video baby monitor

September 1, 2010

Tweet When my sister-in-law got a video baby monitor for her firstborn, my first reaction was that she was taking paranoid parenting to a completely new level. Was it really necessary to be able to spy on him sleeping all the time? Well, then the geekdaughter arrived, and brought with her a new understanding for [...]
