Oh, what a week it’s been. I’ve been under a lot of pressure at work as I’m out of the office on a training course for the whole of next week, and have a number of balls I am trying to juggle that I need to somehow keep in the air whilst I’m away. On top of all that I’ve had a cold. Not a really bad one, but enough to make me feel rotten and tired. This means that I’ve been having a few early nights, and as a result I’ve not blogged as much as I usually would. I tried to start a few posts, but wrote the first sentence and then completely lost inspiration. The good news is that I’m feeling brighter now, so I can share with you  my regular app roundup.

I will never forget the release date of the first iPad, because it was the geekson’s due date – May 28th 2010. The geekdaddy had pre-ordered his iPad, and there was serious concern that the baby might arrive first, meaning we weren’t home to receive his precious new parcel. In actuality the iPad arrived a day early, and the geekson appeared a couple of days late, so we never had a problem. What this tells me is that the iPad will be two years old at the end of this month, and over the two years we’ve owned it we’ve bought a lot of kids apps. Longer than that actually, as we were buying kids apps for the iPhone before the iPad release. Along the way we’ve found a few favourite app developers, who we will pretty much buy anything they make. I told you about a couple of these in a previous app roundup, and today I want to tell you about another one…

I had a great day yesterday – the geekdaddy and I had a rare day out together without the kids, and we went to the Gadget Show Live at the NEC. It’s a huge exhibition of every kind of gadget and gizmo you could imagine under the sun, and we spent the whole day wandering around, immersing ourselves in technology. Rather miraculously we even came away without buying anything, which surprised me! There was one item I would have bought if it was available – an iPad case with integrated keyboard – but as it’s not being released for a couple of months I have had to content myself with just a note of the company name to keep an eye out for in the future.

Anyway, now to tell you about the apps we’ve been playing with this week…

We’ve all been busy this week, and with the nicer weather coming along there’s been a bit more outdoor play and a bit less playing on iPads for the geek family this week. Consequently we haven’t tested out many new apps, and there are only two I really want to tell you about today. They are linked in a rather interesting way though…

Friday app round-up 23/02/2012

February 24, 2012

There are one or two companies who make iPad/iPhone apps for kids who can pretty much do no wrong in my book. They consistently put out high quality, educational, entertaining apps with a wide appeal and what I call a great “shelf life” – something that the kids will go back to time and time [...]

Friday app roundup 10/02/2012

February 10, 2012

I’m trying  something new this week. You’ll have noticed that I haven’t posted an “app of the week” for a while, which is a combination of the geekdaddy being up to his eyeballs in work and not able to do any video editing for me, and my being ill since Christmas and really not feeling [...]

Expanding vocabulary

January 31, 2012

The geekson is 20 months old, and now that he’s got that walking thing completely sussed, he is making big leaps in his speech. The geekdaughter was the same – she focussed on walking first, and then once she’d mastered that her vocabulary just grew and grew. The geekson’s speech seems to be developing slower than I [...]

Watch YouTube on your TV with XBox

January 13, 2012

In my capacity as an XBox Live Ambassador I’ve been testing out a selection of the new features available in XBox Live, to discover that the XBox really is more than games. I’ve watched movies and TV shows, and this week our assignment is to watch YouTube videos. It’s a hard life isn’t it? Read [...]

geekmummy.tv – app of the week – Happy Babies

November 25, 2011

This week it’s all about the geekson. He’s now 17 months old, and although he’s had access to an iPad since birth, it really seems like this week he’s taken a huge developmental leap in terms of interacting with it. Now instead of just randomly hitting at the screen he’s taking the time to look [...]

geekmummy.tv – app of the week – Drawing Pad

November 18, 2011

This week’s app of the week is inspired by my friend Minibreak Mummy who wrote an excellent blog post last week explaining why she thinks the iPad is a perfect computer for toddlers. I have to agree completely with her on that, and so do both my kids! It came out in the comments to that post that [...]

geekmummy.tv – app of the week – Meningitis Signs and Symptoms

November 11, 2011

I’m doing something a little bit different in my “app of the week” spot this week. One of the things I love about my iPhone is that I always have it with me, and that means I can put apps on it in case of emergencies. For example, I have a simple first aid app, [...]

geekmummy.tv – app of the week – GarageBand

November 4, 2011

I’ve been running my “app of the week” segment for a little while now, and I hope you’re enjoying them. My criteria for selecting each app are pretty simple – I look for an app that is relevant to families, and it has to be an app that I would personally recommend. I also try [...]

October 28, 2011

It’s Friday again, which means it’s time for me to share with you an app that we’ve been enjoying this week in my “app of the week” slot. This week, as we’re close to Halloween, I’ve been on the lookout for the best Halloween app to share with you all, and I’ve finally decided on [...]
