Review

Matchbox 60th anniversary miniI knew Matchbox cars had been around for a while, as I played with them when I was a kid, which was longer ago than I care to admit. I remember being particularly proud of my special carry case with little trays that made it easy to store all my cars neatly. But it still came as s surprise when Matchbox contacted me and asked me if I’d like to review their special edition 60th anniversary models. 60th anniversary?! Surely they can’t be 60 years old? But yes, they are. And given the geekson’s love of cars, I couldn’t say “no” to the review opportunity.

Harman PR event-2000-clean-05

This is a special guest post by the geekdaddy. He wants to tell you all about an event he was invited to recently.

Something usual happened. An invitation came through the geekmummy email but it wasn’t for the geekmummy. It was for me, the geekdaddy and it was a chance to go and play with some cool new gadgets. Normally we don’t accept invitations that mean travelling all the way to London from where we live in Cheshire but I’m a sucker for gadgets and audio equipment so I said yes and on Wednesday afternoon off I went.

nook hd home screen with google playI was lent a Barnes and Noble nook HD tablet to review a couple of months ago, and subsequently given a nook HD+ to use. You can read my full thoughts on the tablet in my nook HD review, but in summary I thought it was a good tablet, excellent hardware for the price, the best profile system I’ve seen for multiple users, but let down by the limited app selection since Barnes and Noble were running their own (small) App Store.

So I must confess the nook HD+ has been languishing on the side in the kitchen whilst I’ve stuck with my iPad mini, and the the geekdaddy has been using his Nexus 7.

Well, last Friday that all changed. I think the nook HD just became the best Android tablet on the market today…

The Lion King - ready to goWhen I first heard that the musical version of The Lion King was coming to Manchester, I knew I wanted to take the geekdaughter to see it. I love musical theatre and I’m a big fan of the Disney musical films, which I’ve been enjoying rediscovering with the kids. Since it opened on Broadway I have heard nothing but praise for the Lion King stage version, so I have always wanted to see it. And last half term I got my chance…

Hands on with the Panasonic Combination Oven (review)

March 26, 2013

As one of Panasonic’s Intelligent Living Mums I’ve had the opportunity to visit Panasonic HQ and see their rather fabulous “ideas kitchen”. I’ve also had the chance to test out a few of their products, which is always fun. A couple of months ago a huge box was delivered to the geek residence. A huge [...]

Hands on with the Acer Iconia B1 (review)

March 18, 2013

Here in the geek family we love our tablets. We’ve seen first hand the educational benefits these devices can have, and we’re on a constant mission to find good quality, cost effective family tablets. iPads are lovely, but very expensive, and Android based tablets like the Nexus 7 are starting to prove really viable alterntatives. [...]

nook HD – the most family friendly tablet on the market? (review)

January 31, 2013

The tablet market is absolutely exploding these days. Apple launched the innovative iPad almost three years ago, and for a while it was the only player in town, but now it feels like Android is catching up, and products like the Nexus 7 are making decent tablets a lot more affordable these days. In our [...]

As one of the LEGO Duplo blogger families for 2012 we have had the opportunity to review all sorts of lovely LEGO, and we were really blown away with our most recent delivery – the LEGO Duplo Photo Safari set. It is by far and away the biggest Duplo set I’ve ever seen, boasting 3 [...]

The one where I didn’t get laser eye surgery

November 28, 2012

I remember when we first discovered I couldn’t see very well. I was probably about 7, and we’d been driving as a family somewhere in the car. On the way back my Mum suddenly got all excited and started saying “Look, it’s the Red Arrows”. I couldn’t see what she was talking about. She was [...]

Hama Beads – not so bad after all (Review)

November 20, 2012

Have you played with hama beads yet? They are a craft activity, involving placing little cylindrical beads onto a pegboard and then ironing them in order to melt them together and make them stick into a solid unit. When I first came across them the idea appealed. Something creative, yet not too messy. I do struggle to [...]

Review: Sort & Stack and Build & Play Apps

August 24, 2012

I am always particularly keen to support new and small app development companies, and so when a very polite approach from Prontis Kids dropped in to my mailbox a couple of weeks ago inviting me to check our their two new apps for pre-schoolers I took the promo codes and had a look.

Learning to build stuff with DUPLO

August 7, 2012

Both my kids absolutely love DUPLO. We have a big box full of it, and it’s one of those toys that will entertain them for long periods of time – and as long as they don’t both desperately want the same key piece at the same time they can play together very nicely! Not being [...]

Watching the Planes

July 18, 2012

It seems ironic that the best family outings that we had over the long Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend last month were not at all Jubilee-related. I’ve already told you about my trip to the ballet with the geekdaughter, and whilst it’s taken me a little while to get around to writing this one, today I [...]
