I kept a record of how many steps I did each day and what extra walking I did (e.g. walking to the Students Union and back for lunch was 2000 steps, whereas previously I would used the free hopper bus. The best 'score' was 7000 steps for walking to the Co-op and back, rather than going in the car). Even dancing round the living room improved my score ;-) My average was about 8000 steps a day (you're supposed to aim for 10000 steps a day but I had a few really lazy days that pulled my average down) As I said, the results were pretty impressive. So much so that I've carried on doing the extra walking. I was actively trying to walk more, and used the pedometer to keep score.
