Five apps that encourage unplugged play www.geekmummy.comKids love mobile technology don’t they? I don’t think I’ve ever met a child that didn’t want to get their hands on my iPad, and what’s more impressive is that these devices are so intuitive to use that kids get the hang of how to operate them really quickly. And that’s when the conflicts begin – kids love these devices, but as parents we are constantly trying to balance their screen time with their “unplugged play” time. But did you know there are some apps out there which actually encourage kids to put the mobile device down and do something else instead? Install these apps on your tablet or phone and you’ll give the kids plenty of reasons to step away from the technology and play in more traditional ways…

Easter Egg, by the geekson

Last night as I was putting the geekdaughter to bed, she looked up and me and said “Is it Easter tomorrow Mummy?

“Yes my darling” I said.

Are we having an Easter Egg Hunt?

Google Reader don't panic there are alternativesOn Wednesday Google announced on their official blog that they would be shutting down Google Reader on July 1st 2013. For those of you who have never heard of it Google Reader provides a way to read all your favourite content in one single place, and it’s frequently used by those of us who like to read lots of blogs. Here’s the official Google line:

We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months.

I was very sad to read that news. I use Google Reader on a daily basis to keep up with my favourite blogs, as I am one of that “loyal following”. Chances are some of you are reading this post with it too. So today I’ve been doing some research to see what alternatives are out there.

In the days before I owned a laptop computer, I used to take my big hefty desktop PC (along with huge CRT monitor) on holiday with me. Then I got a laptop, and marvelled at how much lighter and more portable it was, and how much more car space I had when going on holiday!

Then I had kids, and was grateful for that extra car space!!

After getting my iPad it took me a while to realise its full potential. Sure, it was small, and fitted in my handbag, but I still needed to take my laptop with me if I wanted to be able to blog on the move, right?

Wrong!

5 Essential apps for a holiday in the UK

August 3, 2012

We’ve just reached the end of a lovely week and a half away in the UK. A couple of days in Slough to visit Legoland Windsor, followed by a week in a self catering property in Salisbury. Being a modern, connected and geeky family we travel with our iPhones, iPads and laptops, and have never [...]

My Desert Island Apps

July 20, 2012

Imagine the scene. You are alone on a desert island. Completely clear blue skies, not a cloud to be seen. It’s sunny, and the temperature is perfect – not too hot, not too cold. The only sound is the waves gently lapping at the edge of the sandy beach. You are finally able to grab [...]

Review: Blue Microphones Snowball

July 13, 2012

A while ago I was sent the Blue Microphones Snowball to review, and when it arrived I was very unsure how to go about actually reviewing the device. As I am sure I have mentioned before, the geekdaddy and I used to produce a podcast together, and when we were doing that the geekdaddy did [...]

Friday app round-up 30/03/2012 – tally tots, maths and pre-school classroom

March 30, 2012

I’ve been involved in a few discussions this week about whether it’s a good idea for young kids to have access to expensive electronic equipment like iPads. I don;t think it’ll come as a surprise to anyone to learn that I am very much in favour of kids having access to iPads, having seen first [...]

Friday app round-up 16/03/2012 – Miffy, Land of Me and Miss Spider

March 16, 2012

I haven’t picked an app of the week this week, not because there hasn’t been an obvious candidate that we all are unable to stop playing, but because if I keep going on about how fantastic Where’s My Water? – Disney (69p – Universal) is you’re all going to get bored! (They released 20 additional [...]

Which new iPad should I buy?

March 15, 2012

Tomorrow the new iPad goes on sale. I’ve already posted that I won’t be getting one, but based on Apple’s previous performance in this space I suspect a lot of people will. About a year ago I gave some advice on which iPad 2 to buy, so I thought it was time to update my [...]

Friday app round-up 09/03/2012 – a Disney week!

March 10, 2012

This week has been rather dominated by the Apple announcement of the new iPad, and I’ve already written about my initial reaction to that. As far as apps are concerned I’ve managed to grab quite a few new ones this week thanks to some very generous developers who have offered their apps free for a [...]

Should I upgrade to the New iPad?

March 8, 2012

Yesterday there were two big Apple announcements. The first was the new Apple TV, and the second (and probably most anticipated) was the New iPad. No, not the iPad 3. Just the “New iPad”. There was much excitement in the geek family house as we watched the live blog coverage of the event, interested to see [...]

Friday app round up 02/03/2012

March 2, 2012

We’ve all been busy this week, and with the nicer weather coming along there’s been a bit more outdoor play and a bit less playing on iPads for the geek family this week. Consequently we haven’t tested out many new apps, and there are only two I really want to tell you about today. They [...]

Friday app round-up 23/02/2012

February 24, 2012

There are one or two companies who make iPad/iPhone apps for kids who can pretty much do no wrong in my book. They consistently put out high quality, educational, entertaining apps with a wide appeal and what I call a great “shelf life” – something that the kids will go back to time and time [...]
