Kids love mobile technology don’t they? I don’t think I’ve ever met a child that didn’t want to get their hands on my iPad, and what’s more impressive is that these devices are so intuitive to use that kids get the hang of how to operate them really quickly. And that’s when the conflicts begin – kids love these devices, but as parents we are constantly trying to balance their screen time with their “unplugged play” time. But did you know there are some apps out there which actually encourage kids to put the mobile device down and do something else instead? Install these apps on your tablet or phone and you’ll give the kids plenty of reasons to step away from the technology and play in more traditional ways…

On Wednesday Google announced on their official blog that they would be shutting down Google Reader on July 1st 2013. For those of you who have never heard of it Google Reader provides a way to read all your favourite content in one single place, and it’s frequently used by those of us who like to read lots of blogs. Here’s the official Google line:
We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites. While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months.
I was very sad to read that news. I use Google Reader on a daily basis to keep up with my favourite blogs, as I am one of that “loyal following”. Chances are some of you are reading this post with it too. So today I’ve been doing some research to see what alternatives are out there.

In the days before I owned a laptop computer, I used to take my big hefty desktop PC (along with huge CRT monitor) on holiday with me. Then I got a laptop, and marvelled at how much lighter and more portable it was, and how much more car space I had when going on holiday!
Then I had kids, and was grateful for that extra car space!!
After getting my iPad it took me a while to realise its full potential. Sure, it was small, and fitted in my handbag, but I still needed to take my laptop with me if I wanted to be able to blog on the move, right?
