Matchbox 60th anniversary miniI knew Matchbox cars had been around for a while, as I played with them when I was a kid, which was longer ago than I care to admit. I remember being particularly proud of my special carry case with little trays that made it easy to store all my cars neatly. But it still came as s surprise when Matchbox contacted me and asked me if I’d like to review their special edition 60th anniversary models. 60th anniversary?! Surely they can’t be 60 years old? But yes, they are. And given the geekson’s love of cars, I couldn’t say “no” to the review opportunity.

Panasonic combination oven NN-CF771SAs one of Panasonic’s Intelligent Living Mums I’ve had the opportunity to visit Panasonic HQ and see their rather fabulous “ideas kitchen”. I’ve also had the chance to test out a few of their products, which is always fun. A couple of months ago a huge box was delivered to the geek residence. A huge box containing a snazzy combination oven – that’s a microwave, grill and convection oven all rolled into one. Our challenge, should we choose to accept it, was to try to cook with the thing…

The geekson is learning to count. He doesn’t always get all the right numbers in the right order, but he definitely seems to be making the association of pointing to an object and saying the number. He keeps asking to have counting books as his bedtime stories, and often grabs my hand when I’m working through them with him to encourage me to point at each object as we count.

Friday app roundup 11/05/2012 – Magic Sorter, Monkey Drum and some Toca Boca news

May 11, 2012

Oh, what a week it’s been. I’ve been under a lot of pressure at work as I’m out of the office on a training course for the whole of next week, and have a number of balls I am trying to juggle that I need to somehow keep in the air whilst I’m away. On [...]

Family fun at the Sandbach transport festival

May 5, 2012

We’ve lived in the small South Cheshire market town of Sandbach for 13 years now, and I must confess when we moved here we didn’t do an awful lot of research into the town and its history. We ended up here as it was pretty much the closest we could get to my in-laws that [...]

Do you still like what I’m doing?

April 15, 2012

About a year ago I asked you the question “do you like what I’m doing?“, and it was the start of a real rollercoaster ride for me. I had no idea when I asked for your nominations for a MAD Blog Award last year that I would actually end up winning it! Winning the award for [...]

Which new iPad should I buy?

March 15, 2012

Tomorrow the new iPad goes on sale. I’ve already posted that I won’t be getting one, but based on Apple’s previous performance in this space I suspect a lot of people will. About a year ago I gave some advice on which iPad 2 to buy, so I thought it was time to update my [...]

Reading Aloud for World Read Aloud Day 2012

March 7, 2012

Today is World Read Aloud Day. I wrote about this annual event last year, and I very strongly wanted to support it again this year. A worldwide movement is taking action to support the right of every single person living in the world today to learn to read and write. To draw attention to the [...]

Expanding vocabulary

January 31, 2012

The geekson is 20 months old, and now that he’s got that walking thing completely sussed, he is making big leaps in his speech. The geekdaughter was the same – she focussed on walking first, and then once she’d mastered that her vocabulary just grew and grew. The geekson’s speech seems to be developing slower than I [...]

Watch YouTube on your TV with XBox

January 13, 2012

In my capacity as an XBox Live Ambassador I’ve been testing out a selection of the new features available in XBox Live, to discover that the XBox really is more than games. I’ve watched movies and TV shows, and this week our assignment is to watch YouTube videos. It’s a hard life isn’t it? Read [...]

I never expected her first time to be at a friends house

January 6, 2012

It’s something you have to think very hard about. The first time. Not to be undertaken too lightly, not to be left too late. Who wants their child finding out about this stuff in the playground? It is clearly something that needs a lot of thought, and has to be handled right. I always thought [...]

geekmummy.tv – app of the week – Happy Babies

November 25, 2011

This week it’s all about the geekson. He’s now 17 months old, and although he’s had access to an iPad since birth, it really seems like this week he’s taken a huge developmental leap in terms of interacting with it. Now instead of just randomly hitting at the screen he’s taking the time to look [...]

geekmummy.tv – app of the week – Drawing Pad

November 18, 2011

This week’s app of the week is inspired by my friend Minibreak Mummy who wrote an excellent blog post last week explaining why she thinks the iPad is a perfect computer for toddlers. I have to agree completely with her on that, and so do both my kids! It came out in the comments to that post that [...]
